Exhibition “Industrial Use of Marihuana”

DECLARATION

Czech Television CT1 channel transmitted in the evening news on 25 February a report called “The exhibition in the Euro parliament shows marihuana”

The permission to show the exhibition in the building of European Parliament in Strasbourg was asked by an Italian Euro MP Marco Cappato.

He tries to introduce marihuana as an industrial crop used for the production of cosmetics, tofu, and even beer, brewed in the Czech Republic.

I would like to draw the attention to the fact that media together with Mr Cappato confuse the general public and discredit our efforts to develop hemp industry not only in the Czech Republic.

It is essential to distinguish what species of hemp is used!

Marihuana is the name of drug made from Cannabis Indica. However, there is also Cannabis Sativa , so called “technical hemp” , which contains practically no ammount of THC

(tetrahydrocannabinols – psychoactive substance)

The common register of the species of agricultural plants in EU contains about 44 species of Cannabis sativa with less than 0, 3 % THC!

It is pitiable that Mr. Cappato supports the legalization of Cannabis Indica (marihuana) by the exhibition of products made from Cannabis Sativa that has nothing in common with marihuana.

Unfortunately, also in the Czech Republic there are some organizations working for the legalization of marihuana by the means of confusion of the two species, using the products made from Cannabis Sativa.

TV reports like this manipulate with general public and destroy our efforts to return hemp into Czech agriculture and industry.

Hemp has been grown and used as a technical and energy crop in the Czech Republic. The area of hemp grown in 2007 was more than 1 600 hectares. There are also four processing centres that process hemp straw. The developing range of products made from hemp includes cosmetics, ecobriquettes, food, drinks, fabric etc. What is necessary to stress – all the products are made from technical hemp – Cannabis Sativa, not from marihuana.

I would like to ask media to be always exact in hemp specification.
